A Safety Message
from WVDOH

Please be careful. We value your safety, the safety of other travelers, and the safety of the people working to provide you with a better transportation system.

Give 'Em A Brake - Safety Tips

The Corridor D Project will involve many different construction contracts, covering the entire highway development area from US50 in Belpre, Ohio to the US50/Interstate 77 Interchange east of Parkersburg, W.Va.

From time to time, the construction activities will impact existing roadways, with crews working near or on roads currently in use by the general public.

For the construction crews' safety - as well as the safety of the general public - WVDOH provides the following Safety Tips. Many tips listed here are applicable to everyday driving - regardless of the construction zones or not.

Work Zone Facts

• Nationwide - approximately 800 fatal and over 37,000 serious injury crashes occur annually.

• West Virginia - averages approximately 100 accidents, 5 fatalities, and 120 injuries annually

Safety Tips to Live By

• Take an alternate route.

• Heed the warning signs and symbols.

• Don’t become oblivious to signs, especially when the work is long-term.

• Maintain adequate following distance.

• Stay alert - expect the unexpected.

• Minimize distractions.

• Merge as soon as possible - keep traffic flowing.

• Remain calm - don’t succumb to road rage.

• Plan for additional travel time

Beware of Sudden Stops - Most accidents in work zones are the rear-end type; be alert to possible stoppages of traffic and maintain proper distance between your vehicle and the one you are following.

Watch Signs & Flaggers - Pay attention to the instructions of the signs/flaggers. They are presented for the safety of both you and the highway workers.

Slow Down - Travel at or below the recommended speed. Through sound engineering practices and judgement, speed limits are established for your safety.

Stay Alert to Signs - Don't become insensitive to work zone signs. Although the work is long-term and widespread, conditions will be changing constantly.

Maintain Good Following Distance - Allow for adequate stopping distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Stay Alert to the Road - Pay attention to the surroundings. Avoid talking on a cellular phone, changing the radio, etc.

Remain Calm - Don't succumb to road rage. Work zones are in place to improve the roads, not to personally inconvenience you.

Plan for Extra Travel Time - Plan for delays and give yourself extra travel time. Especially if you need to be at your destination, such as work or medical appointment, by a specific time.
