Corridor D bridge
bid opening changed

The bid for the Ohio River Corridor D bridge project, originally scheduled for this week, has been rescheduled to March 9.

A spokesman for the West Virginia Division of Highways' public affairs department said such delays are not uncommon, and he is not aware of problems relating to the project.

Projected to cost about $100 million, the bridge will be the largest contract the transportation department has ever awarded.

Work is expected to begin in early spring and officials hope the bridge will be completed in 2007. The bridge will pass over the western end of Blennerhassett Island, crossing the main navigational and secondary channel of the Ohio River on concrete piers about 69 feet above the river. It will provide four travel lanes with shoulders wide enough to serve traffic during emergencies of future maintenance work, said DOH officials.
